You're Welcome, Little Birthday Girl's Mom

PC's birthday was yesterday. I think he had a great day. He got an iPod so of course it was a great day no matter what happened. Good thing, because the story that follows is a little funny and a little sad at the same time.

I forgot about getting birthday treats for his class ready to send with him to school. So as he was leaving I promised him that I would get something and bring it to the school and leave it in the office. (The days of taking things to your child's classroom and peeking in on them and saying Hi are totally over, thanks to increased security measures!) So I went to Sam's Club and got the Bucket O'Brownie Bites and went to another store to get festive little birthday plates and put all of it in a bag and took it to the school. I dropped it off and the front desk and told the lady that these were for PC's birthday and he was in Teacher X's class. The lady put a sticky note on the bag that said Teacher X. When PC got home from school I was ready for a shower of praise and thank-you's for the yummiest birthday treats ever but instead he was a little mopey and when I asked him about the treats he had no idea what I was talking about. What?? "Didn't you get the treats that I left for you in the office?" "No, Mom, you forgot to bring them." So I got on the phone with the school to find out what happened. Turns out that there was another girl in his class who also had a birthday the same day and when someone from the office dropped off the treats in the classroom she assumed they were from HER mom and passed them out as HER birthday treats. So, you can picture in your mind MY son sitting there looking all sad thinking that HIS mom forgot about his birthday while this treat-stealing little birthday girl passed out MY Bucket O'Brownie Bites. And here's the deal, I got absolutely no credit at all. No credit from my son, no credit from his teacher or my son's friends because I was the lame mom who didn't send treats, or so they thought! After going back to school today, Teacher X talked to PC and felt really bad about the mistake so she is bringing in treats to celebrate his birthday tomorrow.

Sometimes when I find myself getting angry about something I like to make up little stories to make the situation seem a little better in my mind. So here's what I decided about this little mix up. Maybe this girl as a really bad relationship with her mother. And maybe they had an argument that morning and the mom said that she wasn't going to send birthday treats after all. But when the girl saw that birthday treats had arrived at school her feelings toward her mom totally changed and she went home and gave her mom the biggest hug and told her how much she loved her and they worked everything out and now their relationship is awesome and they will be the greatest friends forever. And I get to take a little bit of credit for that, along with the Bucket O'Brownie Bites.

Happy Birthday, PC! From your Mom, who really didn't forget!

You are such a sweet soul! Because I'm wondering about the rest of the story--like what the mother did when her daughter came home and said thank-you. It sounds like a classic set-up for some Disney channel plotline. I will definitely need to try this Bucket O'Brownies.

I LOVE your blog!

I know I shouldn't be smiling, but that whole story just makes me smile! Poor Pearce, and how embarrassing for the teacher too! What a mix-up.

Good for you for finding the silver lining (true or not!). Now the class gets treats twice. That's not a bad deal, either!

I like to make up little stories like that in my head too. I think it makes it easier to love. I'm glad Pearce will get some treats even if its not bucket of brownies.
